Understanding Personality Types

Michael Swita

Why do opposites attract? Why do you get along with certain individuals and not others? Why are some children easier to parent than other siblings? You have probably heard that human beings are creatures of habit. Not only are we habitual, we are, for the most part, predictable. Knowing ones’ personality make-up is a sure way of having a jump start on how to approach or involve individuals who are different from you are.

Imagine knowing what makes certain types of people “tick”. How much better off would you be if you knew what motivated your children or significant other? How about co-workers or your employees? This type of information would be very helpful in assisting you with your interactions. It would put you in the drivers’ seat by providing you information that allows you the best opportunity to relate to others more effectively.

The understanding of the different types of personalities can help reduce confusion and conflict in your interpersonal relationships. It can bring more clarity to your own profile and that of others. Once you gain greater clarity of others, you will also now be in a position to choose different behaviors as to how you might relate differently. Your stress level may decrease, knowing that real change begins with real acceptance of self and others. As Yoda told Luke Skywalker in the movie Star Wars, “You must learn to accept not expect.”

FamilyIQ’s course, ‘Understanding Your Personality Profile,’ can help you delineate the different personality styles. This course was designed to be user-friendly. Four primary colors of red, green, blue and yellow are used to describe the four basic personality styles. For example, green types are great at solving problems and require information to make good decisions. Red types are the energetic ones whose creativity and rebellious nature make for a real challenge. Colors are used because they are easy to remember and easy to apply. Much of the information contained in this course can be traced to Carl Jung, Isabel Meyers, David Keirsey and the author’s personal experience working with children, adolescents and parents in wilderness and community settings.

Crisis and confusion usually precedes understanding. If you are experiencing either of these or looking to learn and grow in new ways, ‘Understanding Your Personality Profile’ will lay the foundation for you. What you can “expect” is interaction and valuable information that will lead you to greater awareness and acceptance of yourself and others.
